How eBay fees are calculated

eBay charges a final value fee on the total amount of the sale (item price plus shipping and handling charged to the buyer, plus sales tax where eBay collects it) and a fixed per-order fee. The percentage depends on the category; Store subscribers pay different rates.

Final value fee

For most categories the final value fee is 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, calculated per item, plus 2.35% of the portion above $7,500. “Total amount of the sale” means the item price plus the shipping and handling charged to the buyer plus any sales tax eBay collects. The percentage changes by category; the table below lists the exceptions eBay publishes for sellers without a Store.

CategoryFinal value fee
Most categories13.6% up to $7,500 per item, 2.35% on the portion over $7,500
Books & Magazines; Movies & TV; Music (not vinyl)15.3% up to $7,500, 2.35% over
Coins & Paper Money (not bullion); trading cards; comics; CCG13.25% up to $7,500, 2.35% over
Coins & Paper Money > Bullion13.6% if the total is $7,500 or less per item, otherwise 7% on the whole amount
Women's Bags & Handbags15% if $2,000 or less per item, otherwise 9% on the whole amount
Jewelry & Watches (except watches, parts & accessories)15% if $5,000 or less per item, otherwise 9% on the whole amount
Watches, Parts & Accessories15% up to $1,000, 6.5% on the portion over $1,000 up to $7,500, 3% on the portion over $7,500
Athletic Shoes (men's and women's)8% with no per-order fee when the total is $150 or more; otherwise the standard 13.6% plus the per-order fee
Guitars & Basses6.7% up to $7,500, 2.35% over
Heavy Equipment; Commercial Printing Presses; Food Trucks, Trailers & Carts3% up to $15,000, 0.5% over; $20 insertion fee
NFT categories5% of the total amount of the sale

Per-order fee

A fixed $0.30 is added to orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 to orders over $10.00. It is charged once per order.

Promoted Listings, international sales and Top Rated Plus

A Promoted Listings General ad fee is the ad rate you chose, between 2% and 100% of the item’s total sale amount including shipping and taxes, charged only when the item sells within 30 days of a buyer clicking the ad. Sales to buyers whose registered or delivery address is outside the US carry a 1.65% international fee on the total amount of the sale unless you use eBay International Shipping. Top Rated Plus listings get 10% off the variable part of the final value fee; the discount does not touch the per-order fee.

eBay’s own worked example, reproduced

eBay’s fee page gives this case: a used smartphone sold for $400 with free shipping to a buyer who pays 6% sales tax, so the total amount of the sale is $424; the seller has used up the month’s free listings. eBay prints a final value fee of $58.06 (13.6% of $424 plus $0.40), an insertion fee of $0.35, total fees of $58.41 and a payout of $341.59. Enter $400 as the price, $24 as the sales tax and $0.35 as the listing fee and the calculator prints exactly those lines; the same page’s $9,500 trading-card example ($1,058.90 in fees, $8,441.10 net) is reproduced to the cent as well, and both are part of the automated tests that run before any change to this page ships.

A second example with your costs

A camera lens sells for $120.00 with $10.00 shipping charged to a US buyer in a standard category, not promoted, no tax. The fee basis is $130.00: 13.6% is $17.68, plus the $0.40 per-order fee makes a $18.08 final value fee, so eBay pays out $111.92. If the lens cost you $40.00 and the label $9.00, your profit is $62.92, a 52.4% margin on the $120.00 price.

Fees differ by site: see the eBay UK (private sellers pay 0%), eBay Canada and eBay Australia (free selling since October 2026) calculators.

What this calculator does not include

  • Store subscription rates (Starter, Basic, Premium, Anchor and Enterprise stores pay different category rates; a store calculator is being verified).
  • Additional final value fees for Below Standard sellers (+6%, +7% after four months) or a Very High item-not-as-described rate (+5%, +6%), and the 3.25% currency conversion charge on non-USD funds.
  • Refunds, partial refunds and fee credits, which follow eBay’s own credit rules.
  • Managed Payments payout timing, currency conversion on non-USD payouts, and dispute fees.

Questions sellers ask

Does eBay charge its final value fee on shipping?
Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, the shipping and handling the buyer pays, and any sales tax eBay collects. Offering free shipping does not avoid the fee; it just moves the shipping cost into the item price.
Why is sales tax in the fee calculation if eBay keeps it?
eBay collects and remits the buyer's sales tax, but the final value fee percentage is applied to the total the buyer paid, tax included. The calculator puts the tax in the fee basis and then removes it from your payout, which is exactly what your eBay statement does.
What is the per-order fee?
A fixed amount added to every order: $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less, $0.40 when it is more than $10.00. It is charged once per order, not once per item.
Which categories have a different final value fee?
Most categories use the standard rate. Exceptions include books, movies and music; coins and trading cards; handbags and jewelry above a threshold; athletic shoes sold for $150 or more; some Business & Industrial categories; guitars and basses; and NFTs. Pick the category in the calculator to apply the exception.
Do Store subscriptions lower the fee?
Yes, Store subscribers pay lower final value fees in many categories in exchange for a monthly subscription. This page shows the standard, non-store rates; a store calculator is in progress and will be linked here when it is verified.
How are Promoted Listings fees charged?
For Promoted Listings General, you choose an ad rate as a percentage of the sale, and eBay charges it only when a buyer clicks the promoted listing and buys within the attribution window. Enter the ad rate in the calculator to see the fee on an attributed sale; leave it at 0 for an organic sale.
When does the international fee apply?
When the buyer's registered address is outside the United States. The calculator adds it when you tick the international option.
How can I pay less in eBay fees?
Check whether your category has a lower rate, qualify for Top Rated Plus, keep promoted ad rates at the minimum that still gets impressions, avoid listings that need insertion fees once your free monthly allowance is used, and price shipping accurately so you are not paying a fee on padding you added for safety.
